Music

The music ministry at the Church of the Holy Apostles exists to assist the congregation in its worship and praise of God. As we come together to hear the Word of God and celebrate Holy Communion, music enriches our experience and lifts our prayers heavenward. Music is liturgy, an integral part of the shape and substance of worship. The majority of our service music is taken from the 1982 Hymnal of the Episcopal Church, with additional music and anthems taken from a variety of sources.

The music program at Holy Apostles is under the leadership of our Director of Music, Mary Hamlin-Spencer. With her enthusiasm, professional experience and superb skills as a choral director and organist, the music program provides exciting and fulfilling opportunities for adults and children to share their talents.

The St. Cecilia Choir provides leadership at all principal worship services from September through mid-June. Membership in this choir is open to adult singers and, in consultation with the Director of Music, high school students. Rehearsals are Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. from September to June. No auditions are required.

A bell choir is open to anyone interested, including youth and children. The bell choir meets on Sunday mornings at 9:00 am. This recent addition to worship at Holy Apostles brings great joy to the congregation as it periodically plays on Sunday mornings and special occasions.

The music program incorporates children. Children sing on special Sundays during the year. Special rehearsals are sometimes needed to prepare for these services; often, the music is learned during the education time on Sunday mornings. We do encourage parishioner instrumentalists of all ages to share their talents with us. If you play an instrument, we invite you to offer your talents to the music program. Speak with Mrs. Hamlin-Spencer, who will assist you in finding an appropriate way to offer your gift of music.
